The Page

Ragged Right is a free line-breaking instrument published by PaintedApp, LLC. It sets one paragraph twice at the same measure, once by first fit and once by the Knuth and Plass total-fit method, and prints each line’s adjustment ratio, badness and demerits. Using it needs no account and costs nothing. By using the page you accept these terms; if you do not accept them, please do not use it.

What the Numbers Are

The badness and demerits on the page are computed by published rules, from the widths your browser measures for the face on your screen. They describe this face at this measure in this browser. Another face, another size or another program will break the same paragraph differently, and the page makes no promise about how any other software sets your text.

Your Paragraph

What you paste stays yours. The page sets it on your device and sends it nowhere. If you share a link to a view, the link carries your paragraph, and whoever opens it will see it.

Accuracy

The engine is tested against the paper it comes from, and the page lists those tests and where they fall short. We work to keep it right, and the page is still provided as it is, without any warranty that it is free of error or fit for a particular purpose. To the extent the law allows, PaintedApp, LLC is not liable for a decision made on the page’s figures.

Other People’s Work

The hyphenation patterns are Gerard D. C. Kuiken’s hyph-en-us.tex from the hyph-utf8 project, used under its notice, which allows copying and distribution with the copyright notice kept. The paragraph on the first screen is the opening of the Grimms’ “The Frog King” in the English that Knuth and Plass set in their 1981 paper. Old Standard TT and Courier Prime are used under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The page’s own code is published under the MIT licence.

Please do not try to disrupt the site, overload it, or use it to harm anyone. Linking to any view of the page is welcome.
