What the Page Aims For
Ragged Right is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2 at level AA. Every control has a written label, every control is reachable and usable from the keyboard alone, and the focus is always drawn as a blue outline. The measure is a native slider: the arrow keys move it one pixel at a time, and Page Up and Page Down move it further.
The Two Pages
The two justified pages are a picture of spacing, so a screen reader is given the words instead: the paragraph is read once, in full, and each page’s total is read from its foot. Every line of both pages is also listed in the tables under Every Line’s Cost, with its last word, its adjustment ratio, its badness, its demerits, and a note when it is loose, overfull or hyphenated.
Colour and Shape
Text contrast is at least 4.5 to 1 against the page, and the paragraph’s ink reaches 16 to 1. The marks in the margin are blue, and colour is never the only signal: each bar has its badness printed beside it, a loose line’s figure is circled, an overfull line reads “over” and ends in a black slug, and a squeezed line’s bar is drawn open where a stretched line’s is solid.
How It Is Measured
Before each release the live page is checked by automated tools: axe-core rules for labels, contrast, landmarks and focus, at a phone width and a desktop width; a mobile check of tap-target size (44 by 44 CSS pixels or larger), text size and sideways scrolling at three device widths; and a check for console errors at 375, 768 and 1440 pixels. Automated checks catch a share of problems, not all of them, so a report from a person who uses the page is worth more than any of them.
Motion
Nothing on the page moves by itself. The pages re-break while you move the measure, at once, with no animation.
Known Limits
The page is in English, and hyphenation follows American English patterns only. Zooming the page enlarges the type, and the widest measure on offer shrinks to what still fits the screen.
Tell Us
If any part of the page is hard to use with your setup, write to support@painted.app with what you were trying to do and what got in the way. A person reads every message.
